Thousands of Airline Pilots Witness UFOs It is an ongoing experience

 

Airline pilots see unidentified flying objects but very few report it because of ridicule.

According to the National Aviation Reporting Center on Anomalous Phenomena, (NARCAP) there have been over 3,500 documented sightings of “Unidentified Aerial Phenomena” by military, commercial, and civilian pilots. But Captain Jim Courant, a commercial pilot for over 31 years, says there are many more sightings that are just not reported.

“It is almost astounding how many people are in the know on this subject,”

 

“They are afraid,” not so much about their status or their retirement benefits, but “they are more afraid for their families,” he said.

He described the experience of one pilot who was flying a 747 over the Pacific in 1980, when he came across a UFO in front of him.

“You won’t believe what we saw,” the pilot had said, according to Courant. “This thing was bigger that a 747.”

Courant said the pilot told him that when he got to his destination in Japan, he “was debriefed and told never to talk about it again.”

WW II Foo Fighters 1940's

 

The term foo fighter was used by Allied aircraft pilots in World War II to describe various UFOs or mysterious aerial phenomena seen in the skies over both the European and Pacific Theater of Operations.

Though "foo fighter" initially described a type of UFO reported and named by the U.S. 415th Night Fighter Squadron, the term was also commonly used to mean any UFO sighting from that period.[1]

Formally reported from November 1944 onwards, witnesses often assumed that the foo fighters were secret weapons employed by the enemy, but they remained unidentified post-war and were reported by both Allied and Axis forces. Michael D. Swords[2][unreliable source] writes:

During WWII, the foo fighter experiences of [Allied] pilots were taken very seriously. Accounts of these cases were presented to heavyweight scientists, such as David Griggs, Luis Alvarez and H.P. Robertson. The phenomenon was never explained. Most of the information about the issue has never been released by military intelligence.

 

History

 

The first sightings occurred in November 1944, when pilots flying over Germany by night reported seeing fast-moving round glowing objects following their aircraft. The objects were variously described as fiery, and glowing red, white, or orange. Some pilots described them as resembling Christmas tree lights and reported that they seemed to toy with the aircraft, making wild turns before simply vanishing. Pilots and aircrew reported that the objects flew formation with their aircraft and behaved as if under intelligent control, but never displayed hostile behavior. However, they could not be outmaneuvered or shot down. The phenomenon was so widespread that the lights earned a name – in the European Theater of Operations they were often called "kraut fireballs" but for the most part called "foo-fighters". The military took the sightings seriously, suspecting that the mysterious sightings might be secret German weapons, but further investigation revealed that German and Japanese pilots had reported similar sightings.[10]

In its 15 January 1945 edition Time magazine carried a story entitled "Foo-Fighter", in which it reported that the "balls of fire" had been following USAAF night fighters for over a month, and that the pilots had named it the "foo-fighter". According to Time, descriptions of the phenomena varied, but the pilots agreed that the mysterious lights followed their aircraft closely at high speed. Some scientists at the time rationalized the sightings as an illusion probably caused by afterimages of dazzle caused by flak bursts, while others suggested St. Elmo's Fire as an explanation.

The "balls of fire" phenomenon reported from the Pacific Theater of Operations differed somewhat from the foo fighters reported from Europe; the "ball of fire" resembled a large burning sphere which "just hung in the sky", though it was reported to sometimes follow aircraft. On one occasion, the gunner of a B-29 aircraft managed to hit one with gunfire, causing it to break up into several large pieces which fell on buildings below and set them on fire. As with the European foo fighters, no aircraft was reported as having been attacked by a "ball of fire"

The postwar Robertson Panel cited foo fighter reports, noting that their behavior did not appear to be threatening, and mentioned possible explanations, for instance that they were electrostatic phenomena similar to St. Elmo's fire, electromagnetic phenomena, or simply reflections of light from ice crystals. The Panel's report suggested that "If the term "flying saucers" had been popular in 1943–1945, these objects would have been so labeled.

The Disappearance of Flight 19 - The Bermuda Triangle – Dec 1945
 
Flight 19 was the designation of five TBM Avenger torpedo bombers that disappeared on December 5, 1945 during a United States Navy overwater navigation training flight from Naval Air Station Fort Lauderdale, Florida. All 14 airmen on the flight were lost, as were all 13 crew members of a PBM Mariner flying boat assumed to have exploded in mid-air while searching for the flight. Navy investigators could not determine the cause for the loss of Flight 19 but said the aircraft may have become disoriented and ditched in rough seas after running out of fuel.
 
Flight 19 was a training flight of five TBM Avenger torpedo bombers that disappeared on December 5, 1945, while over the Atlantic. The squadron's flight plan was scheduled to take them due east from Fort Lauderdale for 141 miles, north for 73 miles, and then back over a final 140-mile leg to complete the exercise. The flight never returned to base.
 
One of the search and rescue aircraft deployed to look for them, a PBM Mariner with a 13-man crew, also disappeared. A tanker off the coast of Florida reported seeing an explosion and observing a widespread oil slick when fruitlessly searching for survivors. The weather was becoming stormy by the end of the incident…

The news covered the loss of several planes and ships, including the loss of Flight 19, a group of five U.S. Navy TBM Avenger bombers on a training mission. Sand's article was the first to lay out the now-familiar triangular area where the losses took place. Flight 19 alone would be covered in the April 1962 issue of American Legion Magazine. It was claimed that the flight leader had been heard saying "We are entering white water, nothing seems right. We don't know where we are, the water is green, no white." It was also claimed that officials at the Navy board of inquiry stated that the planes "flew off to Mars." Sand's article was the first to suggest a supernatural element to the Flight 19 incident. It is a case reported by a former jet pilot in the United States Air Force, Milton John Torres, of Miami, Florida. On May 20, 1957, the 25-year-old Torres was ordered on a mission to intercept and shoot down a large UFO that had been picked up by radar in the skies over East Anglia, United Kingdom. Torres, flying a North American Aviation F-86D Sabre jet approached the object and prepared to fire upon it. As he locked on his weapons, the UFO suddenly zoomed away at a high rate of speed. The details of this case were first made public in a release of UFO-related case files by the British government in October 2008.

 ... The issue of valid U.S. pilot reports of Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP) and the seeming lack of attention given to these reports by the aviation system is a complicated one. There is a longstanding bias in place that severely inhibits the reporting and investigation of UAP incidents. This bias stifles open discussion of UAP amongst aircrews, management, safety administrators, and the researchers who try to acquire information on this important topic.

These incidents can affect aviation safety. Some UAP incidents include very close pacing, and passes that have been described by aircrews as near mid-air collisions. Some UAP incidents also include transient and/or permanent electro-magnetic effects on avionics systems. The distraction to aircrews caused by some phenomena can have a direct effect on cockpit resource management (CRM). In some cases the intensity of light emanated by UAP during a close pass can disrupt night vision. In some cases, passengers and crew have been injured by emergency control inputs implemented by aircrews to avoid what is perceived as a potential collision with UAP.

Some UAP encounters involve ground-based radars that provide verification of the presence of uncorrelated targets near aircraft that are reporting visual observations of UAP. Often these observations and incidents go unreported even though these "radar/visual" events involve significant numbers of witnesses including aircrews and passengers, radar operators, air traffic controllers and supervisors. The confusion surrounding these incidents and observations is evident in the air traffic control tapes that regularly record all transmissions and communication between the control tower, aircraft, and peripheral facilities.

Military pilots are supported by post-mission debriefings as well as specific radars that continually examine their activities and occasionally capture the presence of UAP. In turn, these observations are protected from public scrutiny by secrecy oaths taken by military officers and enlisted men. Even so, through the Freedom of Information Act some of these incidents and observations have become public record. This information seldom travels directly back to the aviation safety planning community.

Fighting a Losing Battle

The failure of Congress to do anything productive about ending UFO secrecy did not reflect the wishes of citizens who were directly affected by it. On December 22, 1958 came the report that 450 airline pilots had signed a petition – alas, futile – protesting the official policy of debunking UFO sightings. This was an extraordinary and unheard-of development. For such a large number of airline professionals to sign this required, one should think, a very strong belief in what they were doing. One pilot described the policy as "a lesson in lying, intrigue, and the ‘Big Brother' attitude carried to the ultimate extreme." Of the signatories, over 50 had personally reported UFO sightings [!] but had been told by the Air Force they were mistaken. Even so, the Air Force still warned them that they faced up to ten years in prison under JANAP 146 if they revealed details of their sightings to the media.

As usual, however, the military and intelligence people who ran UFO policy were not interested in whether people actually liked their policy. On December 29, 1958, the Continental Army Command at Fort Monroe warned its personnel to follow an Intelligence directive issued on May 27, 1958, regarding confidential reporting of all UFOs. The May order was itself classified, and NICAP was unable to get a copy of it. About the time of the Fort Monroe directive, Keyhoe received the final word on the Lackland AFB production of his book: not only had the production been completely stopped, but the radio station was dismantled, and all personnel involved in it were reassigned.

Throughout 1958, the ability of the Air Force and its allies to disable the movement against UFO secrecy was most impressive. It was certainly not above playing dirty pool: back in 1957 someone – most probably the NSA – was behind the attempt to feed NICAP false information in order to discredit it. During 1958, the Air Force exerted heavy-handed, but effective, control over television to censor Keyhoe, was deft and deceptive in managing the press and Congress, and – in the case of Ruppelt – seems to have disabled a key individual who threatened its position on UFOs. Not a bad year.

1959 continued the trend. In retrospect, it is astonishing that Keyhoe entertained the idea of besting his nemesis, "The Silence Group." He was going up against an organization that was into much more than he could dream of. . .

Jim Courant - Commercial Airline Pilot Says UFOs Are Real

 

With nearly 30,000 flight hours under his belt, Jim Courant’s qualifications as a major passenger airline captain are solid. So is his conviction that the UFO phenomenon is real.

"I got the proof that I was after,” Courant says. “That’s the part I won’t discuss. But obviously something has kept me in this, taking the chances I’ve taken.”

The nature of the proof that he found isn’t all that Courant won’t discuss. Concerned about professional repercussions, he declines to confirm the name of his airline. Nor will he reveal the identities of some high level officials who he says have confirmed the extraterrestrial presence in conversations with him.

 

According to Courant, it’s not unheard of for cockpit personnel to turn in pilots who express an interest in UFOs. This can trigger everything from psych tests to what are called “line checks” (in-flight performance evaluations) which, if they go badly, can result in dismissal. The best way to avoid trouble, Courant says, is to steer clear of the topic while in uniform and, even when out of uniform, never to mention your employer’s name in any context that involves UFOs.

In November, 1986, a Japanese crew of a jumbo freighter aircraft witnessed three unidentified objects while flying over Alaska, USA. This sighting gained international attention when the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced that it was going to officially investigate this sighting because the Air Route Traffic Control Center in Anchorage, Alaska, had reported that the UFO had been detected on radar. Captain Terauchi was featured on numerous radio and TV programs and in People Magazine. Within a few months of these events he was grounded, apparently for his indiscretion of reporting a UFO, even though he was a senior captain with an excellent flying record. 'The Missing Times: News Media Complicity in the UFO Cover-up' - Excerpts from the book

 

In 1954, airline companies were urged at a meeting in Los Angeles to forward these official intelligence reports in response to a dramatic increase in UFO sightings. (At that time, UFO reports were said by one military official to be coming in at the rate of 5 to 10 a night from pilots.) Many airline pilots who had UFO sightings were not happy about being silenced by military security regulations. As Aldrich put it, "In 1958 John Lester of the Newark Star-Ledger started a petition on which airline pilots who reported UFOs could register their displeasure with not being able to talk about their UFO sightings because of possible violation of [the] security provision of JANAP 146."

According to an article about the protest by reporter Lester in the December 22, 1958, Star-Ledger, a group of 50 airline pilots, each of whom had reported one or more UFO sightings, blasted the Air Force censorship policy as "bordering on the absolutely ridiculous." The pilots said they all had been interrogated by Air Force officials following their UFO sightings and had become disgusted and frustrated with Air Force methods. As one pilot reportedly put it, "We are ordered to report all UFO sightings but when we do we are usually treated like incompetents and told to keep quiet." Another said he was disgusted when the Air Force told him the object that had paced his aircraft for 15 minutes was a mirage or a bolt of lighting. "Nuts to that," he said. "Who needs it?" An additional 400 airline pilots later added their names to the protest petition, though with little effect. ....

The Chicago O'Hare UFO sighting occurred on November 7, 2006, when people at Chicago O'Hare International Airport reported seeing a saucer or disc-shaped UFO.

 

At approximately 4:40 a.m on Tuesday November 7, 2006, federal authorities at Chicago O'Hare International Airport received a report that a group of twelve airport employees were witnessing a metallic, saucer-shaped craft hovering over Gate C-17.

The object was first spotted by a ramp employee who was pushing back United Airlines Flight 446, which was departing Chicago for Charlotte, North Carolina. The employee apprised Flight 446's of the object above their aircraft. It is believed that both the pilot and co-pilot also witnessed the object.

Several independent witnesses outside of the airport also saw the object. One described a "blatant" disc shaped craft hovering over the airport which was "obviously not clouds." According to this witness, nearby observers gasped as the object shot through the clouds at high velocity, leaving a clear blue hole in the cloud layer.[1] The hole reportedly seemed to close itself shortly afterwards.

According to the Chicago Tribune's Jon Hilkevitch, "The disc was visible for approximately two minutes and was seen by close to a dozen United Airlines employees, ranging from pilots to supervisors, who heard chatter on the radio and raced out to view it."[2][3] So far, no conclusive photographic evidence of the UFO has surfaced, although it was reported to Hilkevitch that one of the United Airlines pilots was in possession of a digital camera at the time of the sighting and may have photographed the event.[4]

Taxi driver Andre Sneed reported the disc sighting while he was waiting at the chicago O'hare international airport. He said that it was no way that it was clouds and that it did not look like any airplane he had ever seen before. [5] The hole reportedly seemed to close itself shortly afterwards

 

Reaction from the Federal Aviation Administration and United Airlines

 

Both United Airlines and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) first denied that they had any information on the O'Hare UFO sighting until the Chicago Tribune, who was investigating the report, filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request. The FAA then ordered an internal review of air-traffic communications tapes to comply with the Tribune FOIA request which subsequently uncovered a call by the United supervisor to an FAA manager in the airport tower concerning the UFO sighting.

The FAA stance concludes that the sighting was caused by a weather phenomenon and that the agency would not be investigating the incident. UFO investigators have pointed out that this stance is a direct contradiction to the FAA's mandate to investigate possible security breaches at American airports such as in this case; an object witnessed by numerous airport employees and officially reported by at least one of them, hovering in plain sight, over one of the busiest airports in the world.[6][7] Many witnesses interviewed by the Tribune were apparently "upset" that federal officials declined to further investigate the matter.

According to the Chicago Tribune's Jon Hilkevitch, "The disc was visible for approximately two minutes and was seen by close to a dozen United Airlines employees, ranging from pilots to supervisors, who heard chatter on the radio and raced out to view it." Both United Airlines and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) first denied that they had any information on the O'Hare UFO sighting until the Chicago Tribune, who was investigating the report, filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request. On March 05, 2004, The Mexican Air Force witnessed 11 flying objects flying along side of them during an air patrol of a drug smuggling. The eleven UFO (unidentified flying objects) could only be seen through the military plane's dome mounted IR-system (infrared), and could not be seen with the naked eye. Neither the crew, nor ground personnel could see the craft with radar. Skeptics have dismissed this as oil platform burn-off flares, but the Mexican military stated that the elevation of the lights was clocked at a higher altitude than theirs. Also, the Mexican Air Force stated they were chasing something, and it disappeared right as the lights appeared. This is a very significant event, mainly because it's the first time a government encounter has come forth publicly. Rodrigo Bravo Garrido, a Captain and pilot for BAVE (Spanish acronym for Aviation Brigade of the Chilean Army) has just published a new book, Ufología Aeronáutica, with the subtitle of “A New Concept in UFO Studies.” As show by the title, the book deals with pilot UFO encounters, discussing in detail a total of 23 cases in which Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP) was reported by pilots or air traffic control personnel. 11 cases occurred in Chile and 12 in other countries (Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Colombia, France, Iran and USA). The book, coauthored with paleontologist Juan Castillo and published by Mago Editores, was released last Thursday November 4th at the Book Fair in Santiago.


Capt. Bravo is not an unknown figure in American or international ufology. He was one of many officials who talked at the famous National Press Club (NPC) event in Washington, DC in November of 2007, organized by filmmaker James Fox and journalist Leslie Kean. Bravo outlined a few aviation cases in Chile at this event, including a near-collision incident with a Boeing 737 airliner “on a final approach to the runway at the El Tepual Airport in Puerto Montt City” in 1988, and a radar-visual sighting in 2000. “The crew of a Chilean plane from the Aviation branch of the Army, flying south of Santiago,” stated Bravo at the NPC, “observed a long cigar-shaped object, a brilliant gray. It flew parallel to the right side of the aircraft for two minutes and then disappeared at a very high speed. This objet was detected by the radar of the Control Center of Santiago which notified the crew minutes before the incident.”

Capt. Bravo was also one of the nineteen contributors who wrote essays for Leslie Kean’s recent bestselling book, UFOs – Generals, Pilots, and Government Officials Go On the Record (Harmony Books), reviewed earlier in this website by this author. He is, in fact, the only one still in active service. What is interesting is that he became involved with UFOs as part of an official military assignment. In his essay for Kean’s book, “Aeronautics Research of the UFO Phenomenon and the Problem with Science,” Capt. Bravo wrote that “in 2000, at the age of twenty-four, I was training to become a military pilot. For my thesis, submitted the following year, I was assigned to pursue research into anomalous aerial phenomena in order to determine their effect and impact on aerospace security. The aviation branch of the Army of Chile, BAVE, had in its files many reports from military pilots describing incidents during flight involving aerial phenomena that did not correspond to normal air traffic. These incidents posed a potential threat to air safety.” Later in the essay, Bravo added that “after conducting this investigation, I concluded in my thesis that UFOs are physically real and their presence in our skies is concrete. However, difficulties arise when we try to study their behavior, because of the complexity of the phenomenon and because of our inability to predict UFO events.”


Bravo has now expanded his thesis into a full book, where he can analyze in detail
23 aeronautical cases and their implications to air flight security. He also criticizes the poor standards of many ufologists who tend to lump all UAPs “indiscriminately with the possibility of extraterrestrial life.” This can “detour” serious research and lead instead to the “explosive growth of new ideologies, movements, cults and others who take anomalous aerial phenomena even further away from its real context for reasons of financial gain.” During the release of his book at Santiago’s Book Fair, Bravo added that “the scientific community has avoided for decades dealing with this subject because those who investigate it don’t necessarily have sufficient knowledge to interpret the available data.” Although true in many cases, this statement is somewhat unfair since, given the reluctance by scientists and official institutions to get involved with UFO research, ufologists are simply filling a void—for better or worse. That was precisely the comment made by journalist and ufologist Juan Andrés Salfate at the Book Fair event. “The subject doesn’t have an owner, the worse that can happen is that it remains in the military and scientific field,” said Salfate.

UFO Hunters is an American television series that premiered on January 30, 2008 on The History Channel, produced by Motion Picture Production Inc., and ran for three seasons.

Jon Alon Walz was the Executive Producer of the show and was responsible for selling the series to History Channel after a bidding war for the rights to the show broke out between History Channel and Sci-Fi Channel (now Syfy).

The concept for the show was tested in a segment of History Channel's 2006 UFO special entitled "Deep Sea UFOs", produced by Motion Picture Production Inc, which featured two of the final four cast members. "UFO Hunters" was not a spin-off from a 2005 History Channel special with the same title.[citation needed]

The tagline of the show is: Hoax or History?

The series should not be confused with a similarly themed and titled UFO Hunters, a special that debuted the same day and time on the Sci-Fi Channel, (now SyFy), and created by the producers of Ghost Hunters, but which only aired one episode.

In the US, History Channel only released the first two seasons on DVD in the correct airdate order. However, the format was only released in full screen (1:33:1) instead of wide screen. In the UK, History Channel released the third and final season on DVD however, the episodes were released in the incorrect airdate order.

In a 2011 interview with Jim Harold, William J. Birnes claimed that after the Dulce Base episode aired, the show was canceled by top level executives at History Channel.

The Chicago O'Hare UFO sighting occurred on November 7, 2006, when people at Chicago O'Hare International Airport reported seeing a saucer or disc-shaped UFO.

The Sighting

At approximately 16:15 CST on Tuesday November 7, 2006, federal authorities at Chicago O'Hare International Airport received a report that a group of twelve airport employees were witnessing a metallic, saucer-shaped craft hovering over Gate C-17.

The object was first spotted by a ramp employee who was pushing back United Airlines Flight 446, which was departing Chicago for Charlotte, North Carolina. The employee apprised Flight 446's crew of the object above their aircraft. It is believed that both the pilot and co-pilot also witnessed the object.

Several independent witnesses outside of the airport also saw the object. One described a "blatant" disc shaped craft hovering over the airport which was "obviously not clouds." According to this witness, nearby observers gasped as the object shot through the clouds at high velocity, leaving a clear blue hole in the cloud layer. The hole reportedly seemed to close itself shortly afterward.

UFO investigators have pointed out that this stance is a direct contradiction to the FAA's mandate to investigate possible security breaches at American airports such as in this case; an object witnessed by numerous airport employees and officially reported by at least one of them, hovering in plain sight, over one of the busiest airports in the world. Many witnesses interviewed by the Tribune were apparently "upset" that federal officials declined to further investigate the matter.

The fifth day of the Citizen Hearing on Disclosure started with John Callahan, who was a Division Chief of the Accidents, Evaluations and Investigations Division of the FAA for 6 years in the 90s. He described a major event that took place while he was active. It happened in January of 1987 when he received a call from Air Traffic Control of FAA in Alaska requesting help with the media that overflowed their Office asking questions about a UFO that chased a Japanese 747. Callahan asked for all data to be sent to him to investigate the topic.

 

 The Japanese pilot described a UFO as big as four aircraft careers with yellow and white lights around the center which followed him for over 31 minutes even when he did 180 and 360 degrees turns. Both the radar and the manual controller observed the UFO. At the FAA headquarters, Callahan briefed the Administrator about the event who immediately set up a meeting with Present Reagan’s scientific staff. The rest can be predicted… CIA asked Callahan not to talk to anybody about the event, that it never happened and that it was a UFO.
